Where in Kata the car will take you

Kata is really two beaches. Kata Beach, the long one, faces the sea at the centre of the resort. Kata Noi is the smaller, quieter bay to the south, and a road climbs over a hill to reach it. Karon, the next beach north, is separated from Kata by a rocky headland.

Most shops and restaurants stand along Kata Road, with Patak Road running parallel to it and a road along the sand itself. The beachfront is short enough to walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes, so a hotel anywhere in the middle is close to everything.

The hill to Kata Noi is steep. If your hotel is up there, or at the end of a narrow lane, write the hotel name in the booking and add a map pin. A large resort can have more than one entrance, so say whether you want the main lobby or a back gate.

Choosing the car for Kata

Seats and suitcases decide the car, and the car decides the price. A couple with two bags sits comfortably in the sedan at 999 THB, which takes up to 3 passengers with luggage. Four adults with four large cases need the SUV or MPV at 1,199 THB, the car for up to 4 passengers with luggage.

Families or friends travelling together usually end up in the minibus at 1,499 THB, which takes up to 9 passengers with luggage. The VIP minibus at 1,999 THB seats up to 8 in a premium cabin and suits a group that wants more room after a long flight.

Luggage fills a car faster than people do. If you are at the limit, take the next size up.

The road from the airport to Kata

The airport sits at the northern tip of the island and Kata is in the south-west, 46 km away. The car heads south on Highway 402, Phuket's main north-south road, past the Heroines Monument roundabout in Thalang and on through the hilly middle of the island. From there the driver chooses the way that is moving best on the day. The last stretch runs through the Karon and Kata streets, where scooters and tuk-tuks set the pace.

Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes. That is the drive only, so add the time you spend at immigration and at the baggage belt when you plan check-in. The distance page compares the time with nearby beaches.

Night landings and holiday weeks

The service runs 24/7. A plane that lands at 1 am gets a driver, and he watches the flight number, so a delay of an hour or two changes nothing. On international flights he waits at Gate 2 next to Exit 2, and on domestic flights at Gate A.

Fast Track at the airport is optional and covers arrivals only.

Trips between 24 December and 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car. On every other date the table price is what you pay.

What is close to your hotel

The Kata Karon viewpoint is on the hill road between Kata Noi and Nai Harn and looks back over Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. It has its own page, the Kata viewpoint guide. One beach north, in Karon, the Karon temple market is held in the temple grounds. Check its current days before you plan around it.

If you are weighing the beaches against each other, Karon is 43 km from the airport and Nai Harn 48 km. Both cost the same as Kata.

What to send when you book

  1. Flight number and arrival date.
  2. Hotel name in Kata, with a map pin if you have one.
  3. Car size.
  4. Payment online with Visa, Mastercard or PayPal.

Questions about this transfer

How do I find the driver at the airport?

On international flights he waits at Gate 2 next to Exit 2. On domestic flights he waits at Gate A. He follows your flight number, so he is there whenever you come out.

We are five adults with five suitcases. Which car?

The minibus at 1,499 THB. It takes up to 9 passengers with luggage. A sedan carries only 3 and the SUV or MPV 4, so five adults would need two cars.

What does it cost if we land on 31 December?

A holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car applies from 24 December to 5 January. A sedan is then 1,399 THB, and an SUV or MPV is 1,599 THB.

My hotel is on Kata Noi. Does that matter?

Put the hotel name and a map pin in the booking. Kata Noi is the bay over the hill from Kata Beach, and a clear pin lets the driver plan the final approach.

My flight is two hours late. Is the driver still there?

Yes. He follows your flight number, so a delay does not cancel the pick-up.
