What you are arriving at in Rawai

Rawai sits right at the bottom of the island, and it does not work like the west-coast resorts. Guides say you do not swim at Rawai itself: the water by the shore is shallow and the sea front is lined with longtail boats. People come for other things.

  • The pier and the seafood market at the waterfront, where you pick fish, prawns or crab from the vendors and have it cooked at a restaurant next door.
  • The Chao Lay (sea gypsy) community, one of the oldest on Phuket, at the end of the sea front by the pier.
  • Longtail boat trips to the small islands off the southern tip, which leave from Rawai.
  • Promthep Cape, just south of Rawai, the island's best-known sunset viewpoint.

Nai Harn, a proper swimming beach, is only a few minutes away by road. If you want sand and swimming every day, look at the Nai Harn transfer as well and compare the two before you book a hotel.

The drive south to the tip of the island

The airport is at the opposite end of Phuket, so the whole 47 km is a run down the length of the island. The driver takes the main roads south through the middle, goes around Phuket Town and heads for Chalong, the busy bay at the south-east. After Chalong it is roughly 5 to 10 minutes on to Rawai.

Count on about 1 hour in normal traffic. For comparison, Kata Beach is 46 km and 1 hour 15 minutes away, and Karon is 43 km and 1 hour 10 minutes. Rawai has more kilometres than Karon and still comes out faster. The distance page goes through the road in more detail.

Most of the slow minutes are in the built-up stretch around Phuket Town and Chalong. The last part into Rawai is calm by comparison.

Finding your hotel in Rawai

Rawai is spread out. Viset Road runs along the coast, and Saiyuan Road is the other name you will hear most often. A guesthouse down a soi inland can be a long way from a villa by the pier, and the two look alike on a small map.

When you book, send the hotel name and a map pin as well as the area name. The driver can then check the last turn before you land. Rawai has many villas and guesthouses on small streets, and a pin removes the guessing. If the address is hard to reach, the car stops at the closest point it can and the driver helps with the bags.

Which car for your group

The price depends on the car you pick, and the table above shows all four.

  • Sedan, 999 THB: up to 3 passengers with luggage.
  • SUV / MPV, 1,199 THB: up to 4 passengers with luggage.
  • Minibus, 1,499 THB: up to 9 passengers with luggage. Suits a group heading out on boat trips together, with dive bags or a lot of gear.
  • VIP Minibus, 1,999 THB: up to 8 passengers in a premium cabin.

Count the bags first, then the people. A family of four with two large cases and two carry-ons is an SUV / MPV job, not a sedan.

Late landings and holiday dates

The service runs 24/7. A flight that touches down at 1 am gets the same price as one at midday, and the driver watches the flight number, so a delay on the runway changes nothing. Immigration and baggage can take a while on a busy night. He waits.

Fast Track is available at the airport if you want to skip part of the arrivals queue. It is for arrivals only.

Trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car. On every other date the table price is what you pay.

What to send when you book

  1. Flight number and date of arrival.
  2. The Rawai hotel name and a map pin.
  3. The car size.
  4. Payment by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal at the time of booking.

On landing, look for the driver at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 if you flew in from abroad, or at Gate A on a domestic flight. The price covers fuel, tolls, the airport pick-up, a child seat, waiting time and free cancellation up to 6 hours before pick-up.

Questions about this transfer

Is Rawai a good beach for swimming?

Not really. The sea front at Rawai is used by longtail boats and the water is shallow. Most visitors swim at Nai Harn, which is only a few minutes away by road. Rawai is better for seafood, boat trips and sunsets.

How long does it take from the airport to Rawai?

About 1 hour for the 47 km in normal traffic. Phuket Town and Chalong are the slower sections, and the last stretch into Rawai is usually calm.

Can the driver find a villa on a small side street?

Yes, if you send the hotel name and a map pin when you book. For addresses that a car cannot reach, the driver stops at the nearest point and helps with the luggage.

Is the price the same if we are four people with big bags?

The price depends on the car. Four people with luggage need the SUV / MPV at 1,199 THB, because a sedan carries up to 3. The number of passengers inside a car does not change its price.

What if my flight lands in the middle of the night?

The driver is there. Transfers run 24/7 and he follows your flight number, so the landing time and delays do not matter.
