The car ferry on the way to Koh Lanta

No road runs all the way to Koh Lanta. The car leaves Highway 4 on Route 4206, which ends at the Ban Hua Hin pier, and drives onto a car ferry to Ko Lanta Noi, the smaller island beside it. From there the road crosses Lanta Noi to a bridge, and the bridge brings you onto Ko Lanta Yai, the island with the beaches. Ban Saladan, the main town and port, is at its northern tip.

Travel guides put the ferry crossing at about 20 minutes, with departures from early morning until around 10 pm. Queues can build at midday and late afternoon in the busy season. The ferry fare is not included in our price and is paid separately. Operators change their timetables and fares, so check the current schedule before you plan around a particular sailing. Some older guides describe two ferries. The bridge between the two Lanta islands has replaced the second one.

Landing in the evening: work out the last ferry first

Our transfers run 24/7, but the car ferry has operating hours. Add your immigration and baggage time to the 3 hours of driving, then compare the result with the last ferry departure you can find for that day. If the numbers are tight, message us on WhatsApp with your flight number before you book, and we will say whether the trip works.

The 3 hours is a driving estimate for 205 km. The queue at the pier is the part nobody can predict, so give yourself more slack than you would on a trip with no water in the middle.

Which end of Koh Lanta is your hotel?

Ko Lanta Yai is about 25 km long and 6 km wide, so the last leg depends on where you sleep. Along the west coast the beaches run north to south: Klong Dao, then Phra Ae, better known as Long Beach, then Klong Khong. Further south the beaches are harder to reach and the island road is longer. Old Town sits on the quieter east coast, and the southern tip is part of Mu Ko Lanta National Park.

Send the hotel name and a map pin when you book, so the driver knows the island road before the ferry.

Which car for a 205 km trip

  • Sedan, 5,299 THB: up to 3 passengers with luggage. A couple with two suitcases.
  • SUV / MPV, 5,599 THB: up to 4 passengers with luggage. It is 300 THB more than the sedan, a small step for a family of four.
  • Minibus, 6,199 THB: up to 9 passengers with luggage. Friends sharing a villa, or a family with several bags.
  • VIP Minibus, 7,199 THB: up to 8 passengers in a premium cabin, for a trip of this length.

Two sedans together cost 10,598 THB, so a party of five or more is better off in one minibus. Details are on the price page.

Holiday dates and flight times

Trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car. Fast Track at the airport is optional and works on arrival only. The driver tracks your flight, so a delay does not cancel the pick-up.

What to send when you book

  1. Your flight number and arrival date.
  2. The name of your hotel or resort on Koh Lanta, with a map pin.
  3. The car size from the list above.
  4. Payment by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.

The driver waits at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 for international flights, or at Gate A for domestic ones.

Questions about this transfer

Is there a car ferry to Koh Lanta?

Yes. Cars cross by ferry from the Ban Hua Hin pier to Ko Lanta Noi, and a bridge then links Lanta Noi to Ko Lanta Yai. Guides give the crossing as about 20 minutes. Check the current schedule.

Does the 3 hours include waiting at the ferry?

Treat it as driving time for 205 km. The queue at the pier varies by day and hour, so allow extra, mostly at busy times.

Is the ferry fare included in the price?

No. The ferry is paid separately. The fixed price covers fuel, tolls, the airport pick-up, a child seat, waiting time and free cancellation up to 6 hours before pick-up, but not the car ferry crossing, whose fare is set by the operator and can change. Ask us on WhatsApp if you want to know the current fare before you book.

Can I book a transfer for an evening landing?

The service runs 24/7, but the car ferry has operating hours. Check the last departure for your date and send us your flight number first.

Is the surcharge for Christmas and New Year per car?

Yes. Trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car, not per passenger.
