How Far Is Kata Beach from Phuket Airport?

Kata Beach is 46 km from Phuket airport by road, and the drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic. The airport is at the north end of the island and Kata is in the south-west, so you cross most of Phuket to get there.

Kata against the beaches around it

The minutes do not follow the kilometres. Rawai is 1 km farther than Kata and 15 minutes quicker. Nai Harn is 2 km farther and 5 minutes quicker. That is the pattern to expect: the final approach to the beach matters more than the total distance.

Crossing the island

From the terminal the car joins Highway 402 and drives south. The Heroines Monument roundabout in Thalang is the first landmark you will recognise on a map, and after it the road runs through the hilly centre of the island. How fast this goes depends on the hour and on the lorries in front.

The driver picks the road for the day, and the final approach is through the Karon and Kata area. Traffic thickens there.

What makes it slower or faster

  • Late at night and in the early morning the roads are quiet and the car moves faster.
  • Late afternoon and early evening bring people out to eat, and the beach streets slow down.
  • Heavy rain slows the whole island, and a hill road slows most.

A figure of 1 hour 15 minutes is a normal-traffic average, not a promise to the minute. If you are meeting someone for dinner, leave yourself room.

Where your hotel sits in Kata

The time is measured to the middle of Kata. A hotel at the Karon end of the beach is a little closer, one on Kata Noi is a little farther, because the road to Kata Noi climbs a steep hill over a headland. Either way the difference is a few minutes, not a different category of trip.

The 75 minutes is also driving time alone. Passport control, the baggage belt and the walk to Gate 2 or Gate A come before it, and the driver waits through all of it.

Questions about this transfer

How many kilometres is Phuket airport from Kata Beach?

46 km by road to the middle of Kata Beach. A hotel on Kata Noi, over the hill to the south, adds a little.

How long does it take?

Allow 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic. At the busiest times of the day through the beach streets, it can take longer.

Is Kata farther than Karon?

Yes, by 3 km and 5 minutes. Karon is 43 km and about 1 hour 10 minutes from the airport, Kata is 46 km and about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Why is Rawai quicker when it is farther?

Rawai is 47 km but about 1 hour from the airport, against 46 km and 1 hour 15 minutes for Kata. The last stretch of the road decides the time, not the kilometres.

Does the time include immigration and baggage?

No. It is the drive from the airport to Kata only, and your driver waits for you at the meeting gate.
