What you see from Kata Viewpoint
Kata Viewpoint and Karon Viewpoint are two names for the same lookout: Kata Noi and Kata are the nearest bays, and Karon Beach is the far one in the view. The Thai name, Khao Sam Haad, translates as the hill of three beaches.
From the platform the three bays line up like this:
- Kata Noi, the smaller bay, right below you.
- Kata Beach, the longer bay, with Koh Poo, a small island, off the shore.
- Karon Beach, the long stretch of sand in the distance to the north.
What is there and how long to stay
It is a short stop. Reports mention a free parking area, a shaded gazebo, and a couple of small stalls selling drinks, snacks and souvenirs a few steps from the platform. Most people stay between 5 and 15 minutes, longer if the light is good.
There is no ticket to buy. Sources describe it as open at any hour at no charge.
The best time to go
Late afternoon. Guides suggest arriving between about 4 and 5 pm, when the light on Kata Noi turns warmer. Sunset draws the biggest crowd, so go a little earlier to get a spot and park easily.
For a bigger sunset scene, Promthep Cape on the southernmost tip of the island is one of the most popular sunset spots on the island and gets very crowded in the high season. The Windmill Viewpoint, between Yanui and Nai Harn beaches on the coastal road, gives a west-coast view and is quieter. Both lie further south.
How to get to Kata Viewpoint
The lookout is on the road that climbs between Kata Noi and Nai Harn. From a hotel in Kata, Karon or Nai Harn it is a short drive. If the viewpoint is one of several stops, a driver by the day is simpler than several separate rides: see hiring a car with a driver around Phuket.
Making a half day of the south coast
The viewpoint sits at the start of a run of coastal stops. Going south, the order is roughly this: the bay at Kata Noi below the lookout, the hill road down to Nai Harn, the Windmill Viewpoint on the coastal road beyond it, and Promthep Cape at the island's southern tip. A driver who waits for you at each one saves you from hunting for a ride at a car park at sunset.
Car size depends on the group, not on the plan: Sedan up to 3 passengers with luggage, SUV or MPV up to 4, Minibus up to 9, VIP Minibus up to 8 in a premium cabin. Each is a fixed price per car. The fleet page has the details.
From Phuket airport to the Kata and Nai Harn side
The viewpoint itself is not a destination in our price list. The nearest ones are Kata Beach, 46 km and about 75 minutes from the airport, and Nai Harn, 48 km and about 70 minutes. Karon, the third bay in the view, is 43 km, about 70 minutes.
| Airport to | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Karon | 43 km | 70 minutes |
| Kata Beach | 46 km | 75 minutes |
| Nai Harn | 48 km | 70 minutes |
Prices are per car, from 999 THB for a Sedan, and the driver meets you at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 for international arrivals. If you land in the afternoon, you can drop the bags, then come up for the late light. Book the Phuket airport to Kata Beach taxi or the Phuket airport to Nai Harn taxi.
