What you are arriving in
Kamala sits on the west coast, with Patong to the south and Surin to the north. The beach is about 2 km long and lined with casuarina and coconut trees. The place began as a Muslim fishing village, and the old village still stands set back from the water, while the resort side of Kamala runs along the sand.
So it helps the driver to know which side of Kamala you are staying on. A hotel on the beach front and one in the old village are approached differently. Send the hotel name and a map pin when you book.
The Phuket FantaSea theme park is in the Kamala area too. If you are staying near it, or coming for an evening there, read the FantaSea page and mention it in your booking.
The drive from the airport
The airport is at the northern end of the island, and Kamala is 27 km away on the other coast. Allow about 49 minutes in normal traffic. Patong, the next big beach south, is 40 km and 65 minutes away, so Kamala saves you 13 km and 16 minutes.
Surin, just to the north, is closer still at 24 km. If you are comparing beaches before you choose where to stay, the distance page lines up the neighbours with their times.
The open road is the quick part. The last kilometres through the village and down to the beach go slower, especially around dinner time, so a hotel at the far end of the bay can add a few minutes to the figure above.
Kamala or Patong
If you have not picked a base yet, the two are easy to compare on the numbers. Kamala is 27 km and about 49 minutes from the airport, and Patong is 40 km and about 65 minutes. The transfer costs the same, so the difference is in what you want around the hotel. Kamala has a reputation as a quieter beach than Patong, popular with families who want a calmer stay. Patong is where the nightlife is, and the Bangla Road page explains how that street works. You can book either one on the same terms, and the Patong page has its own details.
Swimming and the season
The sea off Kamala is calmest in the high season, roughly December to May. From June to November the monsoon brings rougher waves and rip currents along this coast, so swimming needs more care. Your transfer runs the same in all months. The season only changes how you spend the first afternoon: in the dry months you can head straight to the sand, in the wet months it is worth asking your hotel about the sea that day.
Which car for your group
The price follows the car, so pick by seats and suitcases.
| Car | Seats | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan | Up to 3 passengers with luggage | 999 THB |
| SUV / MPV | Up to 4 passengers with luggage | 1,199 THB |
| Minibus | Up to 9 passengers with luggage | 1,499 THB |
| VIP Minibus | Up to 8 passengers, premium cabin | 1,999 THB |
Two people with two big cases fit a sedan. Four adults with a case apiece belong in the SUV / MPV. If the group is nine or fewer and you are all landing together, one minibus is simpler than two cars. The fleet page shows the cars.
After you land
Clear immigration, collect your bags and walk out. On an international flight the driver is at Gate 2, next to Exit 2. On a domestic flight he is at Gate A. He has your flight number, so if the plane is late or the baggage hall is slow, he adjusts and waits.
Transfers run 24/7. A landing at 3 am gets the same price and the same driver as a landing at lunchtime. Fast Track at the airport is optional and works on arrival only.
One date range costs more: trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car. Any other day, the price is the one in the table.
What to put in the booking
- Your flight number and arrival date.
- The Kamala hotel name, plus a map pin if you have one.
- The car size.
- Payment by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.
Fuel, tolls and the airport pick-up are already in the price. The trip home is a separate booking, made on the Kamala to airport page.
Questions about this transfer
How long is the drive from Phuket airport to Kamala Beach?
The distance is 27 km and the drive takes about 49 minutes in normal traffic. That is driving time only, so add the time you spend at immigration and baggage reclaim.
Is Kamala cheaper than Patong?
The four prices are the same: 999 THB for a sedan, 1,199 THB for an SUV or MPV, 1,499 THB for a minibus and 1,999 THB for a VIP minibus. Kamala is shorter by 13 km, but the transfer prices are set per car and do not follow the kilometres.
My flight is delayed by two hours. Will the driver still be there?
Yes. He follows your flight number and meets you when you actually land, so a delay does not cancel the pick-up.
My hotel is in the old village behind the beach, not on the sand. Does that matter?
It does not change the price. It helps the driver to know which side of Kamala you are on, so send the hotel name and a map pin with the booking.
Can eight of us go in one car?
Yes. The minibus takes up to 9 passengers with luggage for 1,499 THB, and the VIP minibus takes up to 8 in a premium cabin for 1,999 THB.
