Where Khao Lak is, and why it is not a Phuket beach
Khao Lak is not on Phuket. It is in Phang Nga province, on the mainland coast of the Andaman Sea, and you leave the island to reach it. The name covers a long strip of beaches and villages along Phetkasem Road (Highway 4), with jungle-covered hills rising behind the shore. The tourist areas include Nang Thong, Bang Niang, Khuk Khak and Bang Sak, with Cape Pakarang at the northern end of the strip.
The feel is different from the Phuket resorts. Khao Lak means long beaches, a mountain backdrop and the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park nearby, with markets in Bang Niang and Khuk Khak. It is also known as a departure point for diving trips to the Similan Islands. Operators, dates and boat times change, so confirm them with your hotel or the dive centre.
The road north over the bridge
The airport lies in the north of Phuket, so this trip does not cross the island like most of the others. The car heads north on Highway 402, leaves Phuket at the Sarasin Bridge crossing and continues into Phang Nga province. From there the route follows Highway 4 up the coast to Khao Lak.
Count on about 1 hour 30 minutes for the 80 km in normal traffic. Roadworks on the way can add time, and the distance page explains what changes the time.
Which part of Khao Lak is your hotel in?
This is the question that decides the last part of the journey. The 80 km is measured to the Khao Lak area, and the strip is long. A hotel at the southern end near Nang Thong is reached sooner than one near Bang Sak or Cape Pakarang, further up the coast.
When you book, send the hotel name, the area (Nang Thong, Bang Niang, Khuk Khak, Bang Sak or Pakarang) and a map pin. The driver will know the last turn before you land and can tell you if your hotel is further up the road than you thought.
Choosing the car for a long ride
You will spend about an hour and a half in the car, so comfort counts as well as price. The table above has all four prices.
- Sedan, 2,199 THB: up to 3 passengers with luggage.
- SUV / MPV, 2,499 THB: up to 4 passengers with luggage. More room for a family with big bags.
- Minibus, 2,999 THB: up to 9 passengers with luggage, for a group or a diving party with equipment.
- VIP Minibus, 3,999 THB: up to 8 passengers in a premium cabin.
If you are just over a limit, go up a size. The price depends on the car, never on the number of people inside.
Before you set off on the 80 km
Once the car leaves the airport there is not much between you and Khao Lak but road, so use the arrivals hall for the small jobs first: a toilet stop, a bottle of water, and a message to your hotel with your expected arrival time. The reception then knows when to expect you, whatever the hour.
If you travel with surfboards, dive bags or other awkward gear, mention it when you book so the car size can be chosen to match. It is easier to change the booking before the day than at the kerb.
Landing late and arriving later
Transfers run 24/7 and the driver follows your flight number, so a delayed plane does not cancel anything. A landing at 11 pm still means a drive of about 1 hour 30 minutes, so with immigration and baggage you reach Khao Lak well after midnight. Tell your hotel you will be late and ask them to hold the room.
Fast Track is available at the airport on arrival if you want to shorten the queue. Trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car. On other dates the table price applies.
What to send when you book
- Flight number and arrival date.
- Your Khao Lak hotel, the area and a map pin.
- The car size.
- Payment by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.
The price includes fuel, tolls, the airport pick-up, a child seat, waiting time and free cancellation up to 6 hours before pick-up. After an international flight the driver is at Gate 2 next to Exit 2. For a domestic flight he is at Gate A.
Questions about this transfer
Is Khao Lak on Phuket island?
No. Khao Lak is on the mainland in Phang Nga province, north of Phuket. The road crosses a bridge off the island and carries on up the coast.
How long is the drive from Phuket airport to Khao Lak?
About 1 hour 30 minutes for 80 km in normal traffic. A hotel further north along the Khao Lak coast takes a little longer than one at the southern end.
My hotel is at Bang Niang. Do I need to tell you anything besides the name?
Send the hotel name and a map pin. Khao Lak is a long strip with several areas, and a pin shows the driver exactly where to go.
Can I be picked up from the airport very late at night?
Yes. The service runs 24/7 and the driver tracks your flight, so landing time and delays do not matter. Let your hotel know about a late check-in.
Is the price the same for two people and for three?
Yes. A sedan is 2,199 THB for the whole car with up to 3 passengers with luggage. The price changes when you need a bigger car.
