The five options side by side
| Option | Works well if | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | You land late, travel with children or carry a lot of luggage | More expensive than public transport when you travel alone |
| Airport bus or shared van | You are on a tight budget and have little luggage | Waiting, other stops, maybe a change of vehicle for the last stretch to Kata |
| Taxi at the terminal | You want to decide on the spot | You must agree a fare or the meter before you leave |
| Ride-hailing app | You have mobile data and like to book yourself | Pick-up rules and waiting times change |
| Rental car | You will explore the island for several days | Driving on the left, hill roads and finding a parking space |
Fares and timetables for the public options change, so check them at the airport on the day you land.
Private transfer
The driver waits at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 on international flights, or at Gate A on domestic ones, and drives you to your hotel in Kata without other stops. The fare is fixed per car, from 999 THB for a sedan to 1,499 THB for a minibus, and covers fuel and tolls. It works at any hour. For one traveller with a small bag it costs more than a bus. For a family, it is the one option where nobody has to carry cases through a change of vehicle. Details are on the booking page.
Airport bus or shared van
Public buses and shared vans cost less than a private car, and the price is the whole attraction. The cost is time. Kata is among the farther beaches, and a shared vehicle can drop other passengers first. Check where the service stops. If it ends short of Kata, you need another ride for the last stretch, with your bags. For a late flight, ask whether anything is still running.
Taxi at the terminal
Taxis queue outside arrivals, and you do not book them in advance. Over 46 km the fare matters, so ask for the meter or agree the full price to Kata before the car moves. Have the hotel name ready, and show the map if the hotel is on the Kata Noi side.
Ride-hailing apps
Apps work on Phuket, but airport pick-up rules vary and driver availability varies, especially late at night. You need data from the moment you land. Look at the pick-up point and the quoted price in the arrivals hall, and keep a second plan ready.
Rental car
A rental car makes sense if you plan to leave Kata every day. If you mainly want to reach the hotel, it adds paperwork and driving on the left after a flight. Ask the hotel whether parking is available before you collect a car, and check the licence rules for your country before you travel.
Which one to choose
- Arriving after dark, or with children and bags: private transfer.
- Travelling alone with a small bag and plenty of time: bus or shared van.
- Want to see what is available: taxi at the terminal, fare agreed first.
- Staying a week and moving around: transfer now and rent later.
Questions about this transfer
What is the cheapest way to get from Phuket airport to Kata?
A bus or shared van usually costs less than a private car for one traveller, but it takes longer and may need a change. Look up the current fare at the airport.
Can I reach Kata from the airport after midnight?
A private transfer runs 24/7. For buses and shared vans, check the last departure, since public services stop at night.
How long is the journey by each option?
A car driving straight there takes about 1 hour 15 minutes over the 46 km. Shared and public transport usually take longer.
What do I need for a private transfer?
Your flight number, the Kata hotel name and a map pin if you have one, and the car size. Payment is online at booking, with Visa, Mastercard or PayPal.
Can I drive myself to Kata?
Yes. The route follows Highway 402 south and then roads to the coast. Plan for driving on the left, hill sections and parking at the hotel.
