Which part of Khao Sok are you going to?
Khao Sok is a national park in Surat Thani province, inland from the Andaman coast. Travellers use two quite different areas of it, and it helps to know which one is yours before you book.
The first is the village area on Highway 401, the road that runs east from Takua Pa toward Surat Thani. The park headquarters, the guesthouses and most jungle lodges are around here. The second is Cheow Lan Lake, which you reach through the Ratchaprapha Dam. That is a separate drive further east, and the raft houses sit out on the water, so the last leg of that trip is by boat. The boat or ferry is not included in the price and is paid separately.
The 135 km and the prices on this page are for the Khao Sok area on the main road. If your stay or lake tour starts at the dam pier, message us on WhatsApp before you book so the drop-off point is agreed. Put the lodge name and a map pin in the booking either way.
Choosing a car for a two-hour-plus drive
Choose by passengers and bags. When you sit in the car for 2 hours 20 minutes, legroom matters as much as boot space.
- Sedan, 2,999 THB: up to 3 passengers with luggage. A couple, or three friends travelling light.
- SUV / MPV, 3,499 THB: up to 4 passengers with luggage. It costs 500 THB more than the sedan and gives a family of four room for the bags.
- Minibus, 3,999 THB: up to 9 passengers with luggage. A group landing on the same flight.
- VIP Minibus, 4,999 THB: up to 8 passengers in a premium cabin, the most comfortable seat for this distance.
Two sedans together cost 5,998 THB, so a party of five or six pays less in one minibus. More on the price page.
The road: Sarasin Bridge, Highway 4, Highway 401
From the airport the car heads north on Highway 402 and crosses the Sarasin Bridge, which takes you off the island and into Phang Nga province. After the bridge you are on Highway 4, the long road up the Andaman coast. It passes the Khao Lak area and carries on to the Takua Pa area, where Highway 401 branches east toward Surat Thani.
Highway 401 is the last part. The coast and its beach resorts fall behind, and the road moves inland through plantation country and forested hills until you reach Khao Sok.
The total is 135 km and the driving time is about 2 hours 20 minutes, an average speed under 60 km/h, because Highway 4 runs through towns and the inland road has bends. The distance page lists the road in stages.
Landing late: drive on, or stop in Khao Lak
Transfers run 24/7 and the driver tracks your flight number. A late plane or a slow immigration queue does not cancel the pick-up, but count 2 hours 20 minutes of driving after you have your bags.
The lodge is the part to check. Jungle lodges and raft houses keep their own check-in hours and, for the lake, their own boat times. Ask yours how late it accepts guests and give the driver its name when you book.
If you land at night, there is another way to cut the day. Khao Lak is 80 km and 1 hour 30 minutes from the airport, on the same Highway 4. Some travellers sleep there and drive on to Khao Sok in the morning. See the Khao Lak transfer if that suits you better.
Fast Track at the airport is optional and works on arrival only. Trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car.
Dry months and wet months
The highway is open all year and the transfer runs all year. What changes is the park. Travel guides generally describe November to April as the drier months and roughly May to October as the wetter ones, with muddier trails. The exact dates shift, so ask your lodge what to expect for your dates and which lake trips are running.
Heavy rain slows the drive too. If you have a boat or a tour the same day, leave yourself some slack.
What to send when you book
- Your flight number and arrival date.
- The name of your lodge or guesthouse in Khao Sok, with a map pin if you have one.
- The car size from the list above.
- Payment by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.
The driver meets you at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 for international flights, or at Gate A for domestic ones.
Questions about this transfer
Can the car take me to a raft house on Cheow Lan Lake?
Raft houses float on the lake, so the last part is by boat from the Ratchaprapha Dam pier, usually arranged by your lodge or tour. The boat is paid separately and is not part of our price. The dam is a separate drive from the main Khao Sok area. Message us before booking if the pier is your destination.
My flight lands at night. Can I still go to Khao Sok?
The service runs 24/7 and the driver follows your flight number. The question is your lodge, so ask until what hour it accepts guests. A night in Khao Lak, 80 km from the airport, is the alternative.
Is the price for the car or for each passenger?
For the car. A sedan is 2,999 THB with one passenger or three. Only the size of the car changes the price.
Is November to April really the best time to go?
Guides call those months the drier ones and roughly May to October the wetter ones, but dates vary and some lake trips depend on conditions. Check with your lodge for your dates.
How do I pay?
When you book, by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal.
