Five ways side by side
| Way | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | A fixed price and a car waiting at the gate | Costs more than public transport for one traveller |
| Airport bus or shared van | The lowest fare | Time, stops and possibly a change of vehicle |
| Street taxi | No booking | A fare to agree for a long ride |
| Ride-hailing app | A price shown on screen | Needs data, and pick-up rules at the airport vary |
| Rental car | Your own wheels for the whole stay | Driving on the left and parking by the pier |
Public fares and timetables change. Check the current ones on the day rather than rely on a figure from a website.
Private transfer
The driver is at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 for international arrivals, or at Gate A for domestic ones, and goes straight to your Rawai hotel without picking anyone else up. The price is per car and fixed: 999 THB for a sedan, up to 1,999 THB for a VIP minibus. It works at any hour, which matters because the drive south is a long one after a long flight. The price is the downside for a solo traveller with one bag. Details are on the booking page and the price page.
Airport bus or shared van
This is the cheapest choice on paper, and the least direct for Rawai. The south of the island is the far end of the line from the airport, so public routes may stop in other places or ask you to change vehicles. With a heavy suitcase that gets old quickly. Ask at the airport which services go south at the hour you land, and when the last one leaves, before you count on it.
Street taxi
Taxis wait outside arrivals and you can simply get in. For a 47 km ride, settle the price before the car moves, or ask for the meter and check that it is switched on. Do it before you get in, not 30 minutes down the road. Say the hotel name and show a pin, because Rawai is long and spread out.
Ride-hailing app
Apps work on Phuket, but the airport has its own pick-up arrangements and they change. You need a data connection when you land, and a long ride to the far south may take a while to be accepted. Open the app in the arrivals hall and read the pick-up point and the full price before you walk out. Keep a second option in reserve.
Rental car
A car makes sense if you plan to see the island: Nai Harn, Promthep Cape and the southern beaches are all close to Rawai. Traffic keeps left, and by the pier and the seafood market parking is tight at busy times. Check the driving licence rules before you travel. For a stay of a few days in one place, the rental is mostly an extra thing to look after.
Which one fits you
- Landing at night, with children or large bags: private transfer.
- Alone, one small bag, plenty of time: bus or shared van, after checking the schedule.
- Want to decide at the kerb: street taxi, with the fare settled first.
- Comfortable with apps and a local connection: ride-hailing, with a fallback plan.
- Staying long and exploring: transfer on arrival, rent a car later in Rawai.
Questions about this transfer
What is the cheapest way from Phuket airport to Rawai?
Public buses and shared vans usually cost less for one traveller, but they take longer and may need a change. Check the current fares and the last departure at the airport.
Can I get to Rawai from the airport at night?
A private transfer runs 24/7. For public buses and vans, find out the last departure first, because they do not run all night.
Do I need to book a private transfer in advance?
Yes, you book it beforehand. Send your flight number, your hotel name with a map pin and the car size, and pay by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.
Is a rental car a good idea for Rawai?
It is useful if you want to move around the south of the island. You drive on the left, and parking near the waterfront is limited. If you only need to reach the hotel, a transfer is simpler.
How long does the trip take whichever way I choose?
A direct car takes about 1 hour for the 47 km. Public and shared options take longer because of stops and waiting.
