The five options at a glance
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | Late arrivals, families, groups, heavy luggage | Costs more than public transport for a solo traveller |
| Airport bus or shared van | Travelling light on a tight budget | Waiting, extra stops, a possible change of vehicle |
| Taxi from the airport | No booking needed | Agree the fare or the meter before the car moves |
| Ride-hailing app | Comfortable with apps and a local SIM | Airport pick-up rules and waiting times vary |
| Rental car | Exploring the island on your own | Left-hand traffic, Patong Hill and evening parking |
Fares and timetables for the public options change, so check them at the airport on the day.
Private transfer
A driver waits for you at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 on international flights, or at Gate A on domestic ones, and takes you straight to the hotel. The price is fixed per car: 999 THB for a sedan, up to 1,499 THB for a minibus. It works at any hour and follows your flight number. The trade-off is cost for one person travelling alone. Split between a group, the car price goes further. See the booking page or the price page.
Airport bus or shared van
Public buses and shared vans are the cheapest option on paper. You pay in time. They stop in other places on the way, can wait for more passengers, and you may need to change vehicle on the way. Check which services currently run to Patong and until what hour, especially for a late flight. With big suitcases it gets tiring.
Taxi from the airport
Taxis queue outside arrivals and need no booking. The risk is the price. Ask whether the meter will be used or agree the full fare to Patong before you get in. The ride is 40 km, long enough that the fare is worth settling first.
Ride-hailing apps
Apps are used on Phuket, but airport pick-up rules and driver availability change, and you need mobile data on landing. Open the app in the arrivals hall, look at the pick-up point it offers and the price shown, and keep a second option in mind. At peak hours the wait can be long.
Rental car
Driving gives you freedom for the rest of the holiday. Traffic keeps to the left, the road over Patong Hill is winding, and parking near the beach is hard to find in the evening. Check the licence rules before you travel. If you only need to reach the hotel, a rental car mostly means parking effort.
Which one to pick
- Landing late, with children or a lot of luggage: private transfer.
- Alone, light bag, plenty of time: bus or shared van.
- Want to decide on the spot: taxi, with the fare agreed first.
- Staying across the island and moving around: rental car, or a transfer now and a rental later.
Questions about this transfer
What is the cheapest way from Phuket airport to Patong?
Shared options such as the bus or a shared van usually cost less for one traveller, but they take longer and may need a change. Compare the current fares at the airport.
Can I get to Patong from the airport after midnight?
A private transfer runs 24/7. For buses and shared vans, check the last departure, because public services do not run all night.
What do I need to book a private transfer?
Your flight number, the name of your Patong hotel and a map pin if you have one, and the car size. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.
How long does it take by any option?
The drive is 40 km. A direct car takes about 1 hour 5 minutes in normal traffic. Shared and public options take longer because of stops and waiting.
Is it easy to drive myself to Patong?
The route is mostly one main road, Highway 402, then the hill road at Kathu. The harder parts are driving on the left, the hill bends and finding parking in town.
