The road north
The car leaves the town and joins Highway 402, also called Thepkrasattri Road, the main north-south road of the island. It heads north through the middle of the island, reaches the Heroines Monument roundabout in Thalang, and carries on to the airport at the northern end. There is no hill pass on the way, so the time stays fairly steady except for traffic.
What changes the 50 minutes
- Weekday mornings and late afternoons: traffic builds around the town, and the first part of the drive is the slowest.
- Sunday afternoon: Thalang Road is closed for the walking street, which shifts where the car meets you but does not change the highway time.
- Vegetarian Festival, usually late September to early October: processions can close streets in the town, so allow more time.
- Heavy rain: the whole route slows down.
- Night: the road is clearer, though the airport is still best reached with your margin intact.
