Working back from your flight time
A common rule of thumb is to reach the airport about 3 hours before an international flight. Your airline's check-in deadline is the one that counts, and a domestic flight may allow less. This table uses the 3 hours, the 65 minute drive and a margin of about half an hour.

The road out, stage by stage

When the drive takes longer
The 1 hour 5 minutes assumes normal traffic. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are typically busier through Kathu and on the hill than the middle of the night. Heavy rain slows the bends first. Patong itself stays lively after dark, so even a night departure starts with a few slow streets.
On a flight with a long check-in queue ahead of you, keep the margin. On a very early flight the road is usually clearer, and the margin matters less.
Leaving from other beaches
The minutes do not follow the kilometres exactly. Kamala is 13 km nearer to the airport than Patong and saves 16 minutes. Karon is only 3 km farther and takes 5 minutes longer.
