The route in order
- The airport sits at the northern end of the island. The car leaves the terminal area and joins Highway 402, the main north-south road, heading south.
- In Thalang the road reaches the Heroines Monument roundabout, the first landmark on the way. It stays on Highway 402, which is also called Thepkrasattri Road.
- The middle part of the trip is the long stretch of the island's main road through the centre of the island. Speed here depends on the hour.
- The last part is the town itself, where the road gets busier and the streets get narrower as you near the Old Town.
The total is 36 km, and the driver picks lanes and turns according to what the road looks like on the day.
Why 36 km takes about 50 minutes
The distance is short, but this is the island's ordinary main road, so the average speed stays modest. Driving time to the town centre in normal traffic is about 50 minutes. Your hotel at the far side of town adds a few minutes, and the time on the road does not include immigration, baggage or the walk to the meeting gate.
Compare it with the west coast. Patong is 40 km away but takes about 1 hour 5 minutes, because the road climbs and descends Patong Hill and ends in a crowded beach town.
When the road is faster or slower
- Night and early morning: the highway is open, and the town is quiet.
- Weekday mornings and late afternoons: local traffic builds around the town, so allow extra minutes for the end of the trip.
- Sunday evening: Thalang Road is closed to cars for the walking street, so a hotel on it means a short walk from the nearest open street.
- Heavy rain: expect everything to slow down, most of all in town.
With a tight check-in or an onward connection, leave a margin instead of planning to the minute.
How it compares with nearby places
Kathu is 33 km and 50 minutes, the same time as Phuket Town. Kamala is 27 km and 49 minutes. Rawai on the south coast is 47 km and 1 hour. Karon is 43 km and 1 hour 10 minutes, and Kata Beach is 46 km and 1 hour 15 minutes.
So the shortest time does not always go with the shortest distance. The kilometres matter less than the roads, hills and towns on the way. For prices, which are the same for all of them, see the price page.
