Where Surin sits on the west coast
Surin Beach lies on the west coast between Bang Tao to the north and Kamala to the south. Guides describe it as calm and residential, with soft sand, headlands at either end and a more open feel than the busier resort towns. Laem Singh, a viewpoint and small cove, is close by on the Kamala side.
Many of the stays are villas and hotels on the slope behind the beach. That matters for your transfer more than the beach itself does, and the section on the final approach below explains why.
Surin, Bang Tao and Kamala: the three-way choice
People choosing a base between these three beaches often want to know what the airport run costs in time. The sedan price is the same for each. The minutes are not.
| From the airport to | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Bang Tao (north of Surin) | 18 km | about 34 min |
| Surin | 24 km | about 40 min |
| Kamala (south of Surin) | 27 km | about 49 min |
Surin therefore costs about 6 minutes more than Bang Tao and about 9 minutes less than Kamala. After a long flight, that gap is small. What people notice is the feel of each place.
The drive from the airport
The airport is at the northern end of the island and Surin is on the west coast, so the car does not need to cross the hilly middle of Phuket. It uses Highway 402, Phuket's main north-south road, and turns west toward the coast in the Cherngtalay area, the same part of Thalang district that includes Bang Tao. Count on about 40 minutes in normal traffic.
Traffic can add minutes at busy hours. If your flight lands in the afternoon or evening, allow a little more than the table figure and let the driver choose the route.
The final approach: hillside stays and Surin Beach Road
Surin Beach Road gives access to the shore. Many of the villas and hotels are not on it. They sit on hills behind the beach, up lanes that can be steep and narrow, and from there the walk to the sand or to a restaurant may be longer than it looks on the map. Guides to the area say a car or driver is practical for hillside accommodation, and that trips to Bang Tao or Kamala usually need transport.
So send more than a name when you book. Add:
- A map pin of the exact entrance, not of the beach.
- A phone number for the villa manager or reception.
- Any gate code or instruction about the last stretch of road.
With that in the booking, the driver knows the last turn before you land.
Swimming in the monsoon months
Surin is an open beach on the Andaman Sea. In the monsoon months the sea can turn rough quickly, and the same water that was calm a day earlier can be unsafe once the surf and currents pick up. Obey the red flags and the lifeguards' warnings, and ask your hotel about the conditions before you go in.
Which car for a villa group
Villa stays attract larger groups, so look at the seats and the luggage together. A sedan at 999 THB takes up to 3 passengers with luggage, an SUV or MPV at 1,199 THB up to 4, and a minibus at 1,499 THB up to 9. The VIP minibus at 1,999 THB seats up to 8 in a premium cabin. The price is for the car, so a full minibus costs the same as a half-empty one.
Meeting your driver
The transfer runs 24/7 and the driver follows your flight number, so a late landing does not cancel the pick-up. International flights meet at Gate 2 next to Exit 2, and domestic flights at Gate A. Fast Track is available at the airport on arrival if you want to skip the queue.
Pay by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book. The price includes fuel, tolls, the airport pick-up, a child seat, waiting time and free cancellation up to 6 hours before pick-up, and trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car.
Questions about this transfer
Is Surin closer to the airport than Kamala?
Yes. Surin is 24 km and about 40 minutes away, while Kamala is 27 km and about 49 minutes. Bang Tao, to the north, is 18 km and about 34 minutes.
Is the taxi price the same to Surin, Bang Tao and Kamala?
Yes. Each of these routes has the same fixed price per car: 999 THB for a sedan, 1,199 THB for an SUV or MPV, 1,499 THB for a minibus and 1,999 THB for a VIP minibus.
My villa is up a hill behind the beach. Can the car get there?
Send the villa name, a map pin of the entrance and a phone number when you book. The driver checks the last stretch before you land. If the lane is very narrow or steep, the villa manager can tell you where the car should stop.
Can I swim at Surin Beach all year?
Not safely at every time. In the monsoon months the sea can become rough quickly, so follow the red flags and the lifeguards' instructions and ask your hotel.
Do I pay extra for a late arrival?
No. The service runs 24/7 and the price does not change with the hour. The only extra is the holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car on 24 December to 5 January.
