Fitting the transfer around your boat

Most people on this route are catching a boat, so the real question is timing. Your boat operator sets the departure time and the time to be at the pier, and the boat will not necessarily wait for a late flight. Ask the operator what happens if you are delayed.

For a boat on the day you land, work backwards:

  1. Get the departure time and the pier check-in time from the operator.
  2. Subtract the 27 minute drive.
  3. Subtract the time for immigration and baggage. On a busy arrival that can take an hour.
  4. Keep a margin. If you do not want to stand in the queue, Fast Track at the airport is optional and works on arrival.

The driver follows your flight number, so a late landing does not cancel the pick-up. Whether the boat waits is the operator's call. If the numbers look tight, land a day earlier or plan to stay nearby overnight.

What Ao Po Pier is

Ao Po Pier is part of Ao Po Grand Marina, on Phuket's east coast at the entrance to Phang Nga Bay. It is a working marina with berths for large yachts and access around the clock. Restaurants and a bar sit by the water, so it is a place to wait comfortably if you arrive early. There is no beach at the pier.

Local guides give about 15 minutes by speedboat to Koh Yao Noi and about 20 minutes to Koh Naka Yai. Treat those as rough figures. Boat times, routes and prices belong to the operator, so check current ones with them. Some Phang Nga Bay tours leave from the marina too. The Ao Por Marina page has more about the marina.

The name varies. Travellers write Ao Po, Ao Por and Ao Po Grand Marina for the same place. Put the name from your boat voucher in the booking, and add a map pin.

The 20 km drive

Ao Po is in the Pa Khlok area. Pa Khlok itself is 16 km and 20 minutes from the airport, and Ao Po is 20 km and 27 minutes. Ao Po is on the east coast, so the ride goes to the bay side of the island and not to the west-coast beaches.

Baan Yamu, on Cape Yamu close to the marina, is 25 km and 31 minutes. If your stay is a villa there instead of a boat, see the Baan Yamu transfer.

Luggage, car size and payment

Ask your boat operator about luggage limits before you pack. Small boats can restrict bags, and you may need a day bag and a suitcase left somewhere else. Count your own bags when you choose the car: the sedan takes up to 3 passengers with luggage, the SUV / MPV up to 4, the minibus up to 9 and the VIP minibus up to 8 in a premium cabin. A group sharing a charter can often fit in a single minibus. Put the boat operator's name in the booking note too, so the driver can match the pier entrance to your voucher.

The driver waits at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 for international flights, or at Gate A for domestic ones. The service runs 24/7. Trips on 24 December to 5 January carry a holiday surcharge of 400 THB per car. You pay when you book, by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal. If you also need a ride back from the pier after your trip, ask about it when you book.

Questions about this transfer

Is Ao Po Pier the same as Ao Po Grand Marina?

Yes, people use the names for the same marina on Phuket's east coast. Use the exact name written on your boat booking and send a map pin so the driver stops at the right pier entrance.

Will the boat wait if my flight is late?

That is up to the boat operator, so ask them before you travel. The taxi will be there either way, because the driver follows your flight number.

What time are the boats?

Schedules and routes are set by each operator and can change with the season. Check current times with the operator, then book the taxi to match.

Can I go straight from the airport in a sedan with my bags?

A sedan takes up to 3 passengers with luggage. For four people or a lot of bags, choose the SUV / MPV at 1,199 THB or the minibus at 1,499 THB.

Is there a surcharge for an early morning pick-up?

No. The price depends on the car, not the hour. The only extra is the 400 THB per car holiday surcharge on 24 December to 5 January.
