The five options side by side
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | Door-to-lodge travel, late landings, families | Costs more than public transport for one traveller |
| Bus or minivan | Light bags and plenty of time | Starts in Phuket Town, not at the airport, and needs a last leg |
| Tour or lodge pick-up | Visitors who book the whole trip in one go | Fixed pick-up times and a fixed programme |
| Taxi or ride-hailing app | Deciding on the day | Fare for 135 km must be agreed first; app availability varies |
| Rental car | Moving around the region afterwards | Left-hand traffic, hills, rain and the return drop-off |
Timetables and fares for everything except the private transfer change, so check them on the day.
Private transfer
The driver is at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 for international arrivals, or at Gate A for domestic ones, and drives to your lodge. The price is per car, from 2,999 THB for a sedan up to 4,999 THB for a VIP minibus, and the service runs 24/7. It is the only option here with no change of vehicle. Booking details are on the route page and the figures on the price page.
Bus or minivan
Intercity buses and minivans toward Khao Sok start from Phuket Town, not from the airport. That means a first leg of 36 km, about 50 minutes, just to reach the town, and then a ride that guides describe as several hours. The park area is spread along the road, so ask where your vehicle stops and how you get from there to the lodge. Check which services run now and when the last one leaves.
Tour or lodge pick-up
Tour operators sell Khao Sok trips and overnight packages from Phuket, and some lodges arrange transport as well. This is convenient when the lake and the stay are one product. Ask whether the vehicle collects at the airport or only at hotels, what time it leaves and what happens if your flight is late.
Taxi or ride-hailing app
Airport taxis need no booking. For a trip of 135 km, agree the full fare before the car moves, or ask whether the driver will use the meter. An app ride this long is outside the everyday use of those apps, so check whether the app offers the trip at all, what it shows as the price, and whether a driver accepts it.
Rental car
Driving yourself suits a trip that includes more of the region. Traffic keeps to the left, Highway 4 is shared with lorries, and the inland hills get slippery in heavy rain. Check the licence rules before you travel and ask the rental company about a drop-off somewhere other than the airport.
Which one to pick
- Landing late, travelling with children or with bags: private transfer.
- Light bag and a flexible schedule: bus or minivan.
- Booking the lake and the lodge together: tour or lodge pick-up.
- Seeing more of the south afterwards: a rental car, or a transfer now and a car later.
Questions about this transfer
What is the cheapest way from Phuket airport to Khao Sok?
Public buses and shared minivans usually cost less for one person, but they start in Phuket Town and take longer. Compare the current fares and times before you decide.
Can I reach Khao Sok from the airport at night?
A private transfer runs 24/7. Public transport does not run all night, so check the last departure. Also ask your lodge until what hour it accepts guests.
What do I need to book a private transfer?
Your flight number, the name of your Khao Sok lodge and a map pin, and the car size. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.
How long does it take by direct car?
About 2 hours 20 minutes for the 135 km. Buses and shared vehicles take longer because of the first leg, the stops and the waiting.
Is it easy to drive to Khao Sok myself?
The route is simple on a map: Highway 402, then Highway 4, then Highway 401. The harder parts are left-hand traffic, lorries on Highway 4 and wet roads in the hills.
