What each way asks of you
| Way | Best when | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | You land late or travel with bags, children or a group | The highest price for a solo traveller |
| Public bus | You have time and one light bag | A trip to a bus station first, and a gap to your hotel at the end |
| Shared van | You want to save money without changing buses | Stops along the way and a departure time that is not yours |
| Street taxi | You decide on the spot | A long ride whose fare you must agree first |
| Ride-hailing app | You are used to apps and have data | Availability for a long trip out of Phuket is not guaranteed |
| Rental car | You will explore the coast | Driving on the left, a long first drive after a flight |
The rows are in a rough order of effort. Fares and timetables for the public options change, so check them on the day.
Private transfer
The driver waits at Gate 2 next to Exit 2 for international flights or Gate A for domestic ones, loads the bags and drives to your hotel in Khao Lak without other stops. It runs at any hour and follows your flight number. The price is per car: 2,199 THB for a sedan, up to 3,999 THB for a VIP minibus. After a long flight the 1 hour 30 minutes behind the wheel is the part you do not have to do yourself. See the booking page and the price page.
Public bus
Travel guides describe a two-step journey: take a taxi from the airport to Phuket's bus terminal, then board a long-distance bus going north on the main highway toward Takua Pa, Ranong or Surat Thani, and get off at Khao Lak. It is the cheapest route and it takes the longest, with a wait at the terminal in between. A bus stops on the main road, and Khao Lak hotels are spread along a long coastal strip, so you may need another ride for the last stretch. Ask at the airport for the current routes and the time of the last bus before you count on this at night.
Shared van
A shared minivan is a middle path. It is cheaper than a private car, but it picks up and drops off other passengers, and it may leave only when it has enough people. For one traveller on a budget it works. For a family with a stroller and four bags the stops become tiring on an 80 km trip. Check the current services and prices at the airport.
Street taxi and ride-hailing
Taxis wait outside arrivals. For a ride to another province, agree the full fare to Khao Lak before the car leaves, or confirm the meter will be used and is on. Show a map pin of the hotel, because Khao Lak has several areas along one long road.
Ride-hailing apps are used on Phuket, but their coverage drops once you leave the island, and airport pick-up rules vary. Check the price and whether a driver accepts the trip before you wait at the kerb. Have a second plan ready.
Rental car
A car suits you if Khao Lak is a base for the coast and the national park nearby. You drive on the left, the first drive comes straight after a flight, and you must have the right licence, so check the rules before you travel. Ask the rental company whether you can return the car in Khao Lak or must bring it back to Phuket. For a week at a resort with a pool, a rental is often more trouble than it is worth.
A quick way to decide
- Late flight, children or heavy bags: private transfer.
- Tight budget and a lot of time: bus or shared van, once the schedule is checked.
- Group or diving gear: minibus transfer, because the price is for the car.
- Exploring the coast for a week: transfer first, a rental car later.
Questions about this transfer
What is the cheapest way from Phuket airport to Khao Lak?
A public bus or a shared van usually costs the least for one traveller, but it takes longer and may involve a trip to a bus terminal or several stops. Check current fares and times.
Is there a direct bus from the airport to Khao Lak?
We cannot confirm a current direct service. Guides describe going to a bus terminal first and taking a northbound bus, so ask at the airport what runs today.
How long does it take to get to Khao Lak?
A direct car takes about 1 hour 30 minutes for the 80 km. Buses and shared vans take longer.
Can I book a transfer for a very late arrival?
Yes. The service runs 24/7 and the driver follows your flight number. Tell your hotel that you will arrive late.
Do I need to give anything more than the hotel name when I book?
Send the flight number, the hotel name, the area of Khao Lak and a map pin, and choose the car size. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal when you book.
